  1. Adler, Alfred 1870-1937.
  2. Austrian psychologist. Adler saw the `will to
  3. power' as more influential in accounting for
  4. human behaviour than the sexual drive theory.
  5. Over this theory he parted company with Freud
  6. after a ten-year collaboration. Born in
  7. Vienna, he was a general practitioner and
  8. nerve specialist there 1897-1927, serving as
  9. an army doctor in World War I. He joined the
  10. circle of Freudian doctors in Vienna about
  11. 1900. The concepts of inferiority complex and
  12. overcompensation originated with Adler, for
  13. example in his books Organic Inferiority and
  14. Psychic Compensation 1907 and Understanding
  15. Human Nature 1927.
